Marion High School is proud to spotlight an outstanding member of the Class of 2025 who was recently awarded a Mu Alpha Theta National High School Mathematics Honor Society: Austin Ferren.
He is one of only 30 students across the country chosen for this special $4,000 scholarship, which honors outstanding mathematics students who have shown dedication to their Mu Alpha Theta chapter, participating in local projects and service in mathematics.
Austin is an officer in the Marion High School chapter of Mu Alpha Theta.
He was a member of the MHS Academic Super Bowl math state champion team in 2024. This team made history as the first to win a state championship in academics in the history of Marion High School. He also has won individual awards all four years of his high school career at the Rose-Hulman University High School Math Competition, finishing 7th as a freshman, 11th as a sophomore, 5th as a junior, and 3rd as a senior.
As a junior, Austin earned the top score of 5 on his AP Calculus AB exam and 750 on his SAT Math test, putting him in the top 10 percent of test-takers nationwide. He has finished as the top scorer at Marion High School on the Indiana Mathematics League exam series in both his junior and senior years, earning him top-25 status for all Indiana students.
Austin has attended three Mu Alpha Theta summer national conventions, earning two individual awards and leading the school to 11th, 12th, and 11th place finishes nationally, the highest placings for Marion High School since the school began attending in 2012.
Mu Alpha Theta National Mathematics Honor Society was formed in 1957, dedicated to promoting scholarship in mathematics and establishing math as an integral part of high school and junior college education. It now comprises more than 100,000 students at more than 2,420 schools around the world.
