MHS senior earns prestigious National Merit award

Marion High School senior Nathaniel Beck has been named a Commended Student by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation — a prestigious honor that was earned only by about 2.6 percent of the 1.3 million students who applied for the Class of 2025 awards.

High schoolers across the U.S. apply for the National Merit Scholarship program by taking the PSAT as juniors. Awards are then announced in their senior year. It is the first time in five years that Marion High School has had a student honored by NMSC.

While Commended Student honorees do not continue on in the scholarship competition, they can add this prestigious designation to their resumes and portfolios.

"Those being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success," NMSC said in their release announcing the award. "These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation. We hope that this recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success."

Marion Community Schools is proud to be able to congratulate Nathaniel for his award!
