Marion students selected for prestigious all-state ensembles

A fifth Marion High School musician has been selected for prestigious all-state honor ensembles at the Indiana Music Educators Association’s upcoming annual conference.

Freshman Madelynn Boogar was selected for the IMEA All-State Percussion Ensemble — only the second time that an MHS freshman has been selected for this honor.

This latest recognition for an MHS musician comes in addition to the four other students who had already learned of their selection for IMEA's honor ensembles. In addition, for the first time a student will represent MHS in the IMEA Future Music Educators Colloquium.

Sabrina Thomas, a senior at MHS, was selected to participate in the Future Music Educators Colloquium. Students selected for this honor must demonstrate a strong desire to be a music educator and will attend IMEA and learn alongside other music educators. She was also selected for the IMEA All-State Honor Concert Band — the second time she has earned this honor — but had to choose between the two opportunities, and has opted to participate in the colloquium opportunity to get a head start on her career goal.

The other students selected for these prestigious ensembles are:
  • Daniel Terhune, a senior, was selected for the IMEA All-State Honor Concert Band — the third time he has earned this honor.
  • Caleb Hawkins, a junior, was selected for the IMEA All-State Honor Concert Band.
  • Caleb Huff, a junior, was selected for the IMEA All-State Percussion Ensemble — the third time he has earned this honor.
These honor ensembles are a great opportunity and give students a chance to learn and grow as musicians. To be selected for these honors, students are nominated by their band director, and nominations are then evaluated based on several criteria to select members of these talented groups from across the state. Selected musicians have been notified and were tasked with practicing the musical selections in preparation for the upcoming performances.

On Thursday, Jan. 11, honor ensemble members from around the state will gather to rehearse together for the first time, with a guest clinician. Then, on Jan. 12 or 13, they will perform together. The schedule of performances for the ensembles featuring MHS musicians is as follows:
  • All-State Honor Concert Band at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, at the Embassy Theatre
  • All-State Percussion Ensemble at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, at the Grand Wayne Convention Center
Marion’s outstanding representation during this music-filled weekend is a testament to the hard work and dedication our students display every day in the classroom, and to the excellence, skill, and professionalism that our music educators bring to their work all year round.

We are proud of all of these Marion Giants!
