Qualifying Marion High School students in grades 9 through 11 are invited to apply for Upward Bound at IWU.
Upward Bound is a federally funded college preparation program providing educational, social, and cultural experiences to local high school students in order to develop them in character, scholarship and leadership. The goal is to help each student find a path to college and teach them the skills and information they will need to be successful in getting a college degree.
During the academic year (September - May) Upward Bound has weekly tutoring sessions, monthly workshops on various topics, and monthly educational and cultural field trips.
Qualifications for the program include income guidelines, first generation college student status (meaning no parent has a 4-year college degree), and/or high risk of academic failure (meaning you did not pass your state standardized math or English test or you have a high school GPA below 2.5).
Participation in Upward Bound does not require an intent to attend IWU. In fact, Upward Bound programming includes several visits to other colleges. Upward Bound students do get to experience life on the IWU campus and what it would be like to attend college there.
