Armed with white boards, dry erase markers, a list of 3,500 words, and team spirit, 13 Marion Giants prepared to compete in the 29th Annual Indiana Academic Spell Bowl State Finals. On Saturday, Nov. 16, 2013, the team traveled to Purdue University for the state competition, where they represented Marion High School very well, and ended in seventh place!

Our students were among 9,800 spellers involved in the competition season, and the team was among 10 in the Class 1 (large schools) division competing in the state finals. (40 teams altogether competed at the state level, out of the 834 teams that competed in regional contests. MHS earned their spot at state by earning first place at their regional competition. "Making it to compete at the state level was a tremendous accomplishment in itself," said team sponsor Danielle Christenson, an MHS English teacher, "and placing seventh was remarkable."

The group that met in a Marion High School study room earlier this week wasn’t there to review for exams or work on a class project. The four local business people were studying pitches from budding entrepreneurs.

Marion High School students who participated in the 2013 Young Entrepreneurs Program, or YEP, presented business plans to the four judges this week. Another set of participants from Mississinewa High School presented to another group of judges the same night. The proposals of two teams from each school were selected to advance to the final round of competition, which will take place Wednesday.

The Grant County Economic Growth Council started the program, now in its third year, to encourage entrepreneurship among younger people and provide them with business basics.

Prior to Friday night’s football games, the parking lots of Grant County area high schools were filled to bursting with tailgaters showing their school spirit.

The county-wide tailgating event was developed in collaboration with local State Farm agents to promote participation in the Celebrate My Drive competition. The competition, which aims to spread awareness about safe driving habits for teenagers, involves making a safe driving commitment at between Oct. 18-26. Prizes include a $100,000 grant or a local concert by Grammy Award winner Kelly Clarkson.
