MHS senior wins business competition, advances to state level

News Blog Category - News Marion High School senior Andrea Persinger earned a first-place finish last weekend at the Business Professionals of America Regional Leadership Contest.

Andrea competed in three categories at the competition, held Dec.9 at the Heartland Career Center in Wabash. She was the top finisher in the Fundamental Spreadsheet Applications category, earning a spot in the upcoming state level competition. She also competed in two other categories, Human Resource Management and Administrative Support Concepts.


For the spreadsheet competition, Andrea had to complete four jobs, including various formatting, formulas, and charts. Club sponsor Cathy Griffin said she was impressed with Andrea’s commitment to learning something new. She had never used the Excel spreadsheet program before beginning preparations this fall for the competition.

She now continues on to the state level conference and competition, set for March 11-13 at the Downtown Marriot in Indianapolis.  

The BPA club is back at Marion High School for the first time in at least a decade. In future years members will be able to work toward eligibility for BPA scholarships. The club also gives a head start to anyone who is interested in a career in business. BPA touches on a wide variety of related skills, from management, to accounting, to human resources, office systems and procedures, various computer skills, entrepreneurship, and more. The BPA competitions also include team contests, so as the club grows there will be more opportunities to earn recognition.
