Marion JROTC cadets sweep top biathlon finishes

News Blog Category - News Twenty-six cadets representing three high schools competed Saturday in the second annual fall Biathlon hosted by the Marion High School JROTC.

The thirteen teams participating in the running and shooting event represented Hobart High School, Anderson High School, and the home team, Marion High School in this running. The Giants brought home the first and second team placements and also produced the top male competitor.

MHS seniors Joseph O’Donnell and Adriana Aleman (seen above) paired together for the winning team for the Giants. O’Donnell also was the competition’s top male biathlete. Aleman missed earning the top finish for females by just seven seconds.
Close on the victors’ heels was the MHS team of Haley Teeguarden (junior) and Levi Hofmann (sophomore), who earned the second place finish.

During the biathlon, the cadets had to run once around the perimeter of the high school, then enter the rifle range and hit their target five times. A penalty lap of about 150 yards was assigned for every missed shot. Cadets completed that cycle three times, then ran one final lap around the school. At a minimum, each cadet ran about two and a half miles.

“It was an epic battle between the two top Marion teams, and the outcome was far from certain even as the match progressed,” Farlow Lt. Col. (Ret.) David Farlow, senior Army instructor for the Marion JROTC. “Mere seconds separated their finishes. It was very close. Both O’Donnell and Aleman had to come from behind on their final laps to defeat Hofmann and Teeguarden.”

This was the second year in a row that O’Donnell finished on the winning team and also was the top male competitor.

“I wouldn’t call it fun, but it was certainly challenging,” Teeguarden said, discussing her first biathlon. “I do want to do more of these competitions.”

Teeguarden, O’Donnell, and Hofmann are active members of the Giants’ rifle marksmanship team. They were also members of last year’s Indiana State Rifle Championship team.
